ABOUT

Whether rocking out to familiar tunes at your favorite bar or bringing the fire to a New Orleans-style second line, the Funkyard Brass Band is looking to bring the fun… and the funk!

Established in 2022, the group transcends genres, blending traditional sounds with new pop hits in pursuit of a good time. Inspired by the New Orleans second line and brass funk traditions, the Funkyard Brass Band has captivated fans with its signature sound, which has taken the music scene by storm. Featuring Michael Bunne on trombone, Evan DeSmitt on alto sax, Erica Zak on tenor sax, Jon Peck on trumpet, and Blake Mott on trombone, the band can wail with the best of them. With Derrick Shriver (sousaphone) and Joe Chesebro (drum kit) keeping things honest in the “groove squad,” you’ll know the party is on its way when you hear this group down the block or up on stage!

The band has been featured at events around the Rochester area, including the Lilac Festival, the South Wedge Harvest Hootenanny, the Brighton Farmers Market, the Naples Grape Festival, the Friends of Loon Lake Summer Series, the Roselawn Summer Picnic, and the LeRoy Oatka Festival. They have also made regular appearances at 20 Deep Winery, Murph’s Pub, M’s Bar & Grill, The Spirit Room, My Wine & Cheese Bar, Buntsy’s Neighborhood Food & Drink, Twisted Rail Brewing Company, and the Fairport Brewing Company, and they are often booked for private events or parties.

They’ve acquired quite a reputation everywhere they go. Testimonials include:

“I highly recommend Funkyard Brass Band! They're a fun group, up beat, energetic, and get the audience involved. They're professional, prepared, play wide variety of music, and I can't wait until we can have them again!" - David Bantle, Stromboli's Restaurant (2025)

“The best band I’ve ever heard!” - Max, 5 years old (2024)

“Definitely worth a listen!” - Michael’s mom (2023)

But in all seriousness, this group can play!

Whether as a featured act, providing the soundtrack for an epic party, or simply making a beautiful Saturday afternoon in the park a little more enjoyable, their energetic and family-friendly Mardi Gras flair can bring a smile to everyone's face. And if you’re reading this right before they start playing, grab a chair, or better yet, your dancing shoes, and get ready for a party! Let the good times roll!
